The Cabo de Gata Natural Park stretches east from Retamar across the cape to Barranco del Honda, Cabo de Gata the area has been protected since 1987 and is the driest place in Europe with an average rainfall of 100mm. South of El Caba de Gata are the Salt Lakes (Las Salinas) where you will find many species of migrant and breeding birds such as Pink Flamingos, Avocets, Storks and Eagles, in other areas of the park you will find the rare Italian Wall Lizard along with more common grass snakes, foxes and hares along with Europe's only native palm tree the dwarf fan palm. The Volcanic hills form dramatic cliffs and capes which provide a beautiful backdrop for the various scattered settlements of white washed flat roofed houses along the coast.
